Automation in Cakewalk is imprecise and confusing. The automation process in Ableton is fluid and seamless. The automation system in Cakewalk functions fine, and it's capable of anything Ableton can do, it's just miserable to work with. The thing that eventually convinced me to switch, and I'm sure many people will disagree with me on this, automation. That, along with the greater variety of hardware built to specially integrate with Ableton, is worth considering. I also think Ableton's hotkeys and macros are much more efficient than Cakewalk's. Everything in Ableton is easier to find, more distinct, and easier to manipulate. I never had a problem using it, but the difference after moving to Ableton is definitely not negligible. My issue with Cakewalk comes mostly from a UI that is, in my opinion, a little clunky. My guess is it has more to do with my slightly outdated PC than it does with the programs, but I have no way of knowing. Ableton was not cheap, and it surprised me that I was loading instruments faster on a free DAW. Obviously we're talking about a difference of a few seconds here, but I think it's notable. One positive that I don't hear very often, nor can I explain: Cakewalk tracked virtual instruments and effects faster than Ableton on my PC. I don't need that driver to run any of the same hardware on Ableton, and I've been using the same computer the whole time. Loads of other people have had this issue, and I've never heard an explanation why. I'm not sure why, but I had to download a separate (free) driver, ASIO4ALL, in order for my interface and midi keyboard to work with Cakewalk. However I will say, Cakewalk really needs some driver compatibility work. Virtually any hardware or software that works with any other DAW will work for this Cakewalk. I'm now an Ableton user, but I had a relatively good experience with Cakewalk, outside a few caveats.Īs far as I'm concerned, cakewalk has no notable compatibility issues. Maybe it’s a little out of fashion now, but the developers are really working hard on updating it and the fact that they‘re giving it for free is an absolutely insane luck for all of us. No guys, Cakewalk by Bandlab is a top shelf professional DAW that for decades costed hundreds of bucks, and it was so popular that midi devices came out with special interfaces for it. Sure Cakewalk has its pros and cons like any other DAW but the only major disappointment for me (and the reason I believe it’s not so popular) is that it’s developed only for windows.Īnyway, I think that nowadays every DAW can do the job for you, except if you are looking for something very very specific, so you must research what fits your needs best.įinally I must say that comments like “Cakewalk is good for a free DAW” sound very odd to me. The fact for my experience is that Cakewalk handles audio better than Ableton, and midi better than Pro Tools and it generally offers a pro level quality in both audio and midi worlds, hitting a sweet spot for my personal workflow. Now that Cakewalk is totally free and regularly updating, a transition to another app sounds to me insane. From time to time I’ve tried and appreciated other DAWS but never found myself thinking of making a transition. I started with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 when i was a little kid, continued with Cakewalk Sonar and still use Cakewalk by Bandlab as a professional musician and producer. The current devs seem to be listening to the community. Plus, Cakewalk has very frequent quality of life updates. It was well worth the money then and it's crazy that it's free now. I've bought the upgrade every year since version 2 XL up to and including Sonar Platinum until it went free as Cakewalk by BandLab. I love trying and finding new and better software and I've yet to find anything that works better for me than Cakewalk. I've been using Cakewalk Sonar since 2004 and I've been experimenting with other DAWs for a very long time. I do some work in a studio that only uses Pro Tools and I find it feels backwards and unintuitive but I know enough to call my self Pro Tools proficient. I colab with a few other people so I often work with other DAWs. I feel like I don't have to fight with it to make it do what I want. I have Presonus Studio One 4, Ableton Live, Pro Tools 11, Reaper, Logic Pro X, LUNA, Ive tried Cubase but I down't own it, and Cakewalk.Ĭakewalk is the only DAW that doesn't annoy me.
